It’s a Baobab tree and you can read more about it here.

We chose this tree for our logo as it embodies all the things we strive to be as a nursery: nourishing, bountiful and resourceful. Every part of this incredible tree can be used for something, aligning with our ‘minimal waste’ ethos.

The spirit of this tree feels like part of the soul of the Woodland Wanderers family and we love bringing it to life in our conversations with the children.

We believe learning extends far beyond the nursery walls. By visiting the community spaces, the library and other local businesses, the children experience real environments that spark curiosity, independence and meaningful conversation. These outings are an important part of how we connect children to their community and support learning through lived experience.

Today the children visited our local library and had a fantastic time exploring everything it has to offer.
Trips like this are an important part of our community ethos. They help children understand that learning doesn’t just happen in the nursery, it happens everywhere.

During the visit, the children:
📚 Explored a wide range of books, developing early literacy skills and an understanding of how stories are organised
🗣 Listened carefully during story time, building attention, comprehension and communication skills

The Power of Junk Modelling
At nursery, we love turning everyday “junk” into something magical! Junk modelling isn’t just fun and creative, it plays a big role in children’s learning and helps us care for our planet too
Using recycled materials like boxes, tubes, lids and cartons encourages children to:
-Use their imagination and think creatively
-Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Strengthen fine motor skills through cutting, joining and building
- Build confidence as they share ideas and talk about their creations

Real food, real learning

In our home corner, children explore real life items just as they would in the world around them. Using real foods and everyday objects supports the Montessori approach, helping children make meaningful connections through role play that feels authentic and purposeful.

Handling real items encourages independence, language development, problem solving and fine motor skills, while also building confidence and respect for their environment. When play reflects real life, children are deeply engaged and learning comes naturally.

You can try this at home too.
Invite your child to help with simple food prep, explore (safe!) real kitchen items, or set up a mini home corner using everyday objects. Sometimes the most powerful play comes from the simplest things.

During forest school, the children managed to dig out a large chunk of natural clay from the ground which began a conversation with the site manager.

We learned that our forest site holds a rich history having been a pottery workshop between 1819 and 1927, and this past is beginning to come alive again through the children’s discoveries.

As a way of connecting with nature and the hands of those who worked here before us, we will continue exploring clay as an ongoing theme, shaping it, creating with it and firing our pieces in the fire pit.

Through this practice, the children continue building a bond with the local environment while also gaining a hands-on understanding of how things are made, and how people in the past crafted the tools and objects needed, fostering a sense of community with our ancestors.

It was a pleasure having the opportunity to meet the Mayor of Haringey at our nursery. Spending time spreading the love around the market, connecting with local families, and getting to know everyone in the community made the day truly special. Moments like these remind us how important it is to come together, celebrate our diversity, and strengthen the bonds that make our community so vibrant.

We had such a fantastic time celebrating Christmas at the Myddleton Road Christmas market last weekend. Our children had a fantastic time taking part in activities within the setting. We also sold cookies to fundraise for our chosen charity, Noah’s Ark.

At Woodland Wanderers, we keep things simple, wholesome and honest when it comes to food.

We’re a vegetarian nursery, and we’re really proud of that. It means the meals we serve are not only nutritious, but also kind to the planet and aligned with the way we teach children to care for the world around them.

Our food is fresh, balanced and full of colour, the sort of meals that help little bodies grow strong and give their busy minds the energy they need to explore, play and learn.

We offer breakfast, snacks, lunch and supper throughout the day, and we sit together at low-level tables so mealtimes feel calm, social and safe.

The children learn new tastes, new foods and new routines just by being part of it.

For us, nutrition isn’t about perfection, it’s about giving children the foundations for a healthy relationship with food. We want them to enjoy eating, to feel confident trying new things and to understand where food comes from.

During Forest School today, we used the campfire as a space for shared storytelling.

Listening to stories outdoors supports early language development, improves attention and listening skills, and encourages children to make links with the natural environment around them.

The campfire setting also helps children understand group routines, take turns, and build confidence in contributing to discussions. It’s a simple but effective way to support communication and early literacy through real-life experiences

When we talk about risky play in Forest School, we’re talking about the kind of challenges that help children grow into capable, confident, and self-aware little humans.

Create a little checklist together, a soft leaf, something round, something rough, a feather, a funny-shaped stick. Let your child lead the adventure!

Gather fallen branches and build a tiny “fairy den” or a small shelter for woodland creatures (real or imaginary!). Great for problem-solving and creativity.

Today we’re looking at one of the MOST important parts of Montessori: the prepared environment, the space designed to help children become confident, independent learners.

✨ Child-Sized World
Low shelves, tiny jugs, small brooms and child-level tables… everything is designed so children can access their own learning without relying on an adult.

✨ Calm + Order
Every material has a clear place.
A peaceful, predictable space helps children develop:
• focus
• emotional regulation
• responsibility
• a full work cycle (choose → explore → tidy)

✨ Real Materials
Wood, metal, fabric, even glass — these offer texture, weight and real feedback.
A glass jug, for example, encourages careful hands and concentration.

This week we’re sharing a little more about how we use the Montessori ethos in our day-to-day nursery life.

For us, Montessori is really about giving children the chance to try things for themselves through slowing down, stepping back and letting children have a go.

You’ll often see moments here where a child is fully focused on something simple: pouring their own drink, tidying away their activity, choosing a book, or helping a friend. These small things matter. They build confidence, patience, and a real sense of “I can do this”.

Our role as adults is to guide when needed, but also to observe and give children time. Sometimes the hardest part is not stepping in too soon, but the pride on their faces when they achieve something independently makes it worth it every time.

🌿 Deep Dive: The Heart of Forest School 🌿

What is Forest School?
At Woodland Wanderers, Forest School is at the heart of what we do. It’s an approach to early years learning that takes place in the natural environment, led by the child’s curiosity. Rather than structured lessons, children explore freely, climbing, collecting, creating, and discovering, while practitioners support them to take appropriate risks and build confidence at their own pace.

Where it came from
The Forest School philosophy originally came from Scandinavia, where outdoor learning has long been part of early education. In Denmark, for example, “friluftsliv”, meaning “open-air living”, is an important part of childhood. The idea travelled to the UK in the 1990s, and has since grown into a well-established approach used by nurseries and schools to help children connect deeply with nature and themselves.

Why it matters
Forest School is more than just playing in the woods. It’s about nurturing resilient, confident, independent children who aren’t afraid to get muddy, make mistakes, and try again.

🪓✨ Making a Mallet at Forest School!
When the old mallet went missing, our little Forest School explorers seized the opportunity to make a new one from scratch! 🌿
Using a bow saw, they carefully cut a section of log, then shaped the handle with a bill hook and knife — all under close supervision, learning to use real tools safely and with purpose.
Activities like this help children develop independence, focus, problem-solving skills, and a real sense of achievement. They learn that when something needs replacing or fixing, they have the creativity and confidence to make it happen themselves.

🔥 Raspberry porridge kind of morning 🍓

The children have been cooking up something delicious at Forest School this week, raspberry porridge made over the fire! 🥣🔥

They helped to mix the oats, stir the pot and, of course, taste-test their creations (the best bit!).

Our preschool children had so much fun making their very own carrot cake this week!

Our Forest School children have been exploring the fascinating world of spiders this week!

Using willow branches and twine, they carefully created their very own circular web 🕸️, learning how spiders spin their homes and how strong and clever these little creatures really are.

Out in the woods, the children worked together to build a giant rope web between the trees. They then challenged themselves to climb from one side to the other without touching the web, a fantastic STEM activity that encouraged problem-solving, balance, and perseverance. 💡💪

It’s been such a joy watching their curiosity and teamwork come alive through this topic! 🌿

Montessori Magic in Motion: Red Rods + Number Rods

Did you know that two of the most iconic Montessori materials — the Red Rods and Number Rods — can work together to build both spatial awareness and early math skills?

The Red Rods help children develop visual discrimination of length, coordination, and concentration. Each rod increases by 10 cm, laying the foundation for understanding sequencing and measurement.

The Number Rods take it further by introducing the concept of quantity and number. Each rod is segmented into alternating colors (usually red and blue) to represent units 1–10 — giving a tactile and visual way to explore addition, subtraction, and more.

When used together:
Children begin to see patterns. They compare, measure, and match lengths. The Red Rods train the eye and hand, while the Number Rods train the mind for math. Together, they bridge the abstract and the concrete — the Montessori way.
